This symmetrical 4-transistor topology often provides a good compromise between area and performance. More area efficient than the use of a dedicated resistor for cascode bias but not as efficient as using a thin diode as cascode bias (although of course this depends on many things; most often this is the case but not always). Performance is often comparable or better than the diode-biased cascode (can attain improved matching on layout due to topology symmetry and larger device sizes) but inferior than the use of a dedicated resistor.
